This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and safeguard your information when you use the Wakapay mobile application (the "App"). Our services are provided at no cost and are intended for use "as is."

Biometric & TrueDepth Data (iOS only)

For users of the Wakapay iOS App, we integrate the Smile ID SDK, which makes use of Apple's TrueDepth API (ARKit) when you take a selfie for identity verification.

What We Collect

While capturing a selfie, ARKit may process 3D spatial orientation and facial expression data from your device's TrueDepth camera.

Purpose of Collection

This data is used solely to confirm that the selfie is being taken by a live person. The purpose is authentication and fraud prevention — ensuring the user is real and preventing identity spoofing or unauthorized account creation.

Data Sharing

  • All ARKit data is processed entirely on your device.
  • It is not stored, transmitted, or shared with Wakapay, Smile ID, or any third parties.
  • Neither Wakapay nor Smile ID receives or has access to this raw TrueDepth data.

Retention

The ARKit data used for liveness detection is never retained. Once the authentication check is complete, the data is discarded immediately on-device.

4. How We Share Information

We may share information in the following circumstances:

Service Providers:

With trusted partners (e.g., payment processors, data analytics, cloud hosting, customer support). These parties are contractually bound to use your data only for the services we request. Key partners include:

  • Google Play Services
  • Google Analytics for Firebase
  • Firebase Crashlytics

Legal & Compliance:

When required by law, subpoena, or legal process; or to protect rights, investigate fraud, ensure safety, or respond to government requests.

Business Transactions:

In case of a merger, acquisition, or asset transfer, your data may be part of the transaction.

5. Data Retention & Deletion

We retain user data while you maintain an account and for a reasonable period thereafter to meet legal obligations.

AML Compliance:

In line with Tanzanian Anti-Money Laundering regulations, we must retain customer and transaction records typically for 5-10 years. After this period, data is securely deleted or anonymized.

User Deletion Requests:

You may request account deletion via info@wakapayments.com or through the App. Your data will be flagged for deletion, subject to the AML retention period.

6. Data Security

We implement physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect your information. Data transmitted between your device and our servers is encrypted using industry-standard protocols (HTTPS/TLS).

That said, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute protection.

Uninstall:

You may stop data collection by uninstalling the App.

Permissions:

You can manage permissions (e.g., camera access) through device settings. Disabling certain permissions may limit functionality.

Cookies:

While the App does not use cookies directly, third-party tools (e.g., Google Analytics) may. You can manage preferences via your browser or device.

8. Children's Privacy

The App is not intended for individuals under 18. We do not knowingly collect data from minors. If such data is identified, it will be promptly deleted. Parents/guardians may contact us for assistance.
